Honoring Our Arawak AncestorsBy Guanahata Ben EmmanuelThe entire Americas belong to its indigenous peoples (the Native Americans). The lands of the Americas were our gift from the Great Spirit (Zemi). In return for this gift, we had to love the land, respect and take good care of it and unselfishly share it among the inhabiting tribes. The land was so good to us that we never had to leave it to go elsewhere. Native Americans have always lived in the Americas. Unfortunately, in 1492, those good days came to an abrupt end when the ships of the 'Evil Pirate', Christopher Columbus, and his savage companions (the Spaniards, the French, and, later, the Anglo-Saxons) reached the shores of our lands. It needs to be said that the Evil European colonizers were successful in many areas, in which they excel, such as: Stealing our gold and lands, raping our women, displacing our peoples, inflicting sufferance, pain, and all kinds of diseases upon our indigenous peoples, killing millions (yes, millions!) of indigenous men, women, and children throughout the Americas (North, South, Central). However, they failed to accomplish their ultimate goal, which was to annihilate the entire Native American population. It is very important to understand why that is so. They came short of their objectives, because of the courage of great men and women, Guanabaica (warriors) who fought against terrorism for dignity, honor, and to defend their people and land. May it be known that: We have been fighting against terrorism and tyranny for the last 500 years! Today, the American continent is controlled by the descendents of the colonizers, the British, Spaniards, and French (to a lesser extent). They have so much control that in many cases they are the ones who decide who is a Native American, who is not. And so we say: We do not need outsiders to tell us who we are. We are proud to be of Arawak descent and we will continue to honor our ancestors dead or alive. It should not be surprising to see that in the last 100 years, they have opened the door to other Europeans like themselves, from many parts of Europe, to help them secure their stolen wealth. It should be clear to all that when we mention 'Europeans' it also includes the Spaniards (Hispanics/Latinos which whould not be confused with indigenous/african people who identify themselves as hispanics or latinos ) because prior to Spanish colonization, no such group as the Hispanics or Latinos existed anywhere on our lands. Hence, their ancestral country is Spain, and their ancestral continent is Europe. They are not indigenous to any part of the Americas. Any serious historian studying the history of the Hispanics or Latinos would be foolish to begin his study in Latin America; they would have to look to the History of Spain (Europe) to find the roots of the history of Hispanics or Latinos. It is not for no reason that European-Americans view Columbus as a hero. To them, he is the person to whom they owe the conquest of this land that they have ravaged like savages. To us, Arawaks, Columbus is an evil man, a pirate, a rapist, and a terrorist. Having said that, it is our duty as Arawaks/Tainos to honor our ancestors, by paying tribute to the great caciques who led our people and gave their lives in wars to protect our lands, men, women, and children. Their legacy and faces should be known and remembered by all those who live in the Americas. We are proud of these great men of honor who fought valiantly against the pale-faced marauders. Indeed, they exemplify the Arawak way. Long live the Arawak people!
